If you’re considering remodeling your kitchen and wondering if it’s “worth it”…it is! Before you dive into your next kitchen remodel head first, let’s do a quick cost overview.

Kitchen Remodelers in Newton, MA

Many homeowners have impractical expectations of what a kitchen remodel will cost…believe it or not, HGTV isn’t actually the most realistic depiction of what it’s like to renovate your home (although we can admit we also love watching a 2-month house renovation magically happen overnight.. and for just $10,000!!

Setting your budget with realistic expectations is important to your project’s success and your overall happiness throughout the project. Your budget ultimately depends on your financial circumstances and what you’re hoping to include in your kitchen remodel, but there are important factors to consider.

So, what questions should you be asking about setting a budget for your kitchen remodel? Here are a few key places to start:

How much does it cost to remodel a kitchen in Massachusetts?

The cost of every kitchen remodel is different, because no two projects are completely identical. Everything in a kitchen renovation has a price associated – from choosing what appliances and light fixtures you want, right down to choosing your cabinet hardware

According to the 2023 Cost vs. Value Report (www.costvsvalue.com), the average cost of an upscale kitchen remodel in Boston was $169,019 in 2023

Kitchen Remodel NewtonWhen it comes to controlling costs in your kitchen remodel, there will be some things that you can control, and some costs that you can’t predict. Design choices are controllable costs – like choosing a backsplash that’s $5/square foot versus $25/square foot. That’s where you’re able to make smart decisions to maximize your budget!

Additional work that’s discovered once the project starts falls in the “uncontrollable costs” category. It’s not uncommon that older homes have additional work orders. From finding rotted wood in the framing of the original kitchen, to discovering old knob and tube electrical running through the walls of your entire house…you’d be surprised at the things we come across in some of these older New England homes.

While those discoveries aren’t always anticipated in the original budget, they are necessary updates that if found, need to be prioritized and remedied in order to bring your house up to current code. If you know your home is older, plan ahead for a few of these surprise costs if you’re trying to be realistic about your kitchen remodeling budget.

How much does a kitchen remodel add to the value of a home?

Kitchen Remodel Navy Blue and White Cabinets

Whether you’re restructuring your kitchen to better fit your aging in place needs, or you’re just redesigning to have the kitchen of your dreams, remodeling your kitchen is a huge add value to any home. The cost of a kitchen remodel may seem high at first, but the investment is worth it in most cases because of the value it provides both immediately and over time if you ever sell your home.

The Cost vs. Value guide suggests that an upscale kitchen remodel in Greater Boston increases the value of your home by $52,168, on average. It is important to carefully weigh this added future value when you’re thinking about your budget and what you’re comfortable with.

The exact value-add of a kitchen remodel will depend on a variety of factors, including the extent of the remodel, the condition of the rest of the house (number of bedrooms, recent remodels in other parts of the house, etc.), and your home’s location. When you sell your home in the future, the value will largely depend on the housing market at that time.

Tip: If you’re looking for a quick-win kitchen update before you sell, have your cabinets painted and change out your backsplash! You can appeal to whatever the latest kitchen trends are, to increase interest and value in your home. It can make your kitchen look brand new for a fraction of the cost and time of a full-gut kitchen remodel.

What is the ROI of a kitchen remodel in Massachusetts?

The amount you spend on your kitchen remodel will influence how much your home grows in value over time. The ROI, or Return on Investment, generally indicates a percentage of the money invested in a remodel that you can expect to recover after selling the house in the future.

Kitchen Remodel Cook Range

The average return on investment of an upscale kitchen remodel was 30.9% in 2023 per the Cost vs. Value report. Of course, the ROI will vary project to project, and depends largely on the same factors that impact the full cost of your kitchen remodel.

Along with monetary returns, don’t forget about the immeasurable returns… like being happy to cook and entertain in your beautiful, newly remodeled kitchen 🙂

What is the most expensive part of a kitchen remodel?

In a kitchen remodel, there are two different types of costs: labor and materials. Labor will be a significant part of your budget because of the amount of specialty tradespeople involved in every kitchen remodel. When working with a general contractor like Tom Curren Companies, we’ll leverage our relationships with our trade partners to get you great labor rates on your project.

Kitchen Remodel Cabinet Painting

When it comes to materials, the most expensive part of any project is typically the cabinets. Even a minor kitchen renovation can cost up to $20,000 in cabinets alone. This is because cabinets are typically made-to-order, driving the price up. Although this is a significant sum, keep in mind that cabinetry plays an essential part in your kitchen’s aesthetics and storage capacity. Instead of fully replacing your cabinets, painting cabinets that are still in good shape is a great way to save a chunk of money when remodeling your kitchen.

While it is not the most expensive component of your kitchen remodel, picking a countertop is another design decision that will undoubtedly swing your budget. There are a lot of options to choose from at all price points, so you should feel confident that you’ll find something you love that matches your budget.

What’s the next step in pursuing a kitchen remodeling project?

Kitchen Remodel BacksplashWith supply chain issues continuing, lead times for standard products are regularly delayed, and price increases are occurring almost daily. Choosing paint colors for your small kitchen can be one of the hardest decisions you have to make while renovating. In recent years, all-white kitchens emerged as a major kitchen trend that many homeowners were choosing during remodeling and painting projects. White kitchens are great for homeowners who want a bright kitchen with a clean look that also makes your small kitchen feel more open. However, if you’re looking to add a little color to your kitchen, we have some small kitchen paint color suggestions to get you inspired!

There are thousands of options, and if you don’t already have an idea of what color you’d like to go with, it can be an intimidating process. Before deciding on a color scheme, it’s important to understand how certain colors can influence your space. For example, if you have a smaller kitchen there are certain color palettes that will be more flattering in your kitchen than others. Whether you prefer boldly saturated gem-tones or subtle beachy neutrals, the right color combinations can drastically change your space.

So where do you start when deciding on a small kitchen paint color palette? Natural colors are the central idea behind many of the current design trends and the best paint colors for small kitchens in 2022. If you have a small kitchen, here are some ideas for colors that can inspire you with your next kitchen remodeling project in Newton, MA!

Light Paint Colors in Your Kitchen

Small Kitchen Paint Colors White Cabinets

If you have a small kitchen, you may want to avoid painting it a dark color. Dark colors can make your kitchen feel even more enclosed and claustrophobic – which isn’t how you want to feel in a space that’s already tight. One trick to make your space feel larger is using lighter colors, like neutrals or pastels in your kitchen’s color scheme. Where dark colors absorb natural light to make a room feel smaller, neutrals and pastels do the opposite and reflect the light that is available.

Neutral Kitchen Colors

Many homeowners have gravitated towards using colors that make their space feel cozy rather than crisp. Especially if you have a small kitchen, you want to be paying attention to how colors are interacting inside the space. Warm-toned neutrals can evoke feelings of coziness because of the red and yellow hues that are reminiscent of the sun or heat, and blue and greens can create feelings of peacefulness.

Neutrals like oatmeal, buttermilk, or sand are in high demand for kitchens in Newton, MA. Warm-toned off-white colors allow light to bounce around without giving a room the same sterile feeling that cool-toned whites can have. Neutrals are also a great option for kitchens because, in addition to brightening up your space, they’re easy to decorate. Neutral colors pair well with a range of colors and design elements, and complement any decorating style from modernism to art deco and more.

Pastel Kitchen Paint Colors

Pastels are popular in kitchens because they have the same brightening effect as off-whites. having a clean, visual appeal. Whether you want to give your walls or your cabinets a little pop, or just a subtle hint of color, pastels have the ability to inject a lot of personality into your kitchen without sacrificing design flexibility.

Small Kitchen Paint Colors

By color drenching your kitchen with a monochromatic palette, you can transform your small kitchen into a contemporary dream. A low-contrast color scheme makes your kitchen appear larger by creating a flow throughout the entire room. Without a large pop of color to break up different surfaces, a low-contrast color scheme in your small kitchen aids to the illusion of lengthening the walls and space.

If you’re wondering how to blend a small kitchen with a living room paint color, using a low-contrast color scheme will help you do so seamlessly. Blending a small kitchen with adjoining living room paint colors can be tricky to accomplish, especially when using severely contrasting colors. In this case, lighter colors will likely be your best friend, leaving the whole space looking and feeling larger.

Two-Toned Kitchen Cabinets

Two-toned cabinets are a hot design trend that creates depth in your kitchen by creating the illusion of sections with different paint colors. This stylistic approach can easily make a small kitchen appear more spacious without necessarily doing anything more than painting a set of cabinets – which can save you thousands of dollars and time on your kitchen renovation. If you’d like to achieve the two-toned cabinet look, consider painting your cabinets, there are many small kitchen paint colors to combinations to consider.

Small Kitchen Remodel Cabinet Painting

If you have an island in your kitchen, consider creating a focal-point shift by painting the island a different color than the rest of the cabinets. If you don’t have an island, you can still accomplish the two-toned kitchen look by painting the bottom cabinets a different color than the top. Be sure to keep the darker color on the bottom cabinets so that the top cabinets don’t overpower the room and make it feel topheavy. By keeping darker colors and finishes on the bottom, and lighter colors on the top you’ll have a more open feel.

Simplify the Color Palette in Your Kitchen

When deciding which small kitchen paint colors are right for your home, you need to decide on a color palette. For your small kitchen, it’s best to limit the colors to just one or two principal shades. A simple two-tone color palette or a monochromatic scheme prevents a small kitchen from getting overwhelmed and muddled with too many colors. By limiting your color palette and selectively using darker or bolder colors, you can create a dynamic kitchen design that distracts from the size of the kitchen, and refocuses on the design and use of color.

Kitchen Cabinet Painting Remodeling Newton MA

Any color you decide on will ultimately look great combined with a soft neutral, or white. These are a few small kitchen paint colors to combine with white cabinets if you’re looking to change the color of your lower cabinets while keeping your upper cabinets white.

Earth Tone Paint Colors in Kitchen

Earth tones and natural colors form refreshing color schemes in small kitchens and can make a huge difference in how your space is perceived. Earth tones are nature-inspired colors that contain some brown pigment. The hint of brown in earth tones creates a warming effect that mutes the appearance of the colors, making them feel comforting and cozy. Typical earthy tones that you may be familiar with are terracotta, sage, yellow ochre, turmeric, charcoal, tape, dusty blush, etc. Using these earthy colors in your small kitchen can make the space feel calm and inviting.

Blue Kitchen Paint Colors

Blues are another natural, versatile color tone that doesn’t tend to overpower a small kitchen. From a classic, deep navy to a stunning and bright turquoise, any shade of blue is sure to make a splash in your kitchen. The color blue has natural recessive properties that draw the eyes outwards, giving the impression of a never-ending space like the ocean, or sky. Blue is a very calming color, creating a relaxing atmosphere to cook and entertain.

Green Kitchen Paint Colors

Green is a great color to introduce to your small kitchen if you want to invigorate your space. Small kitchens can feel cramped and overcrowded, but by using the color green in your design you can invoke feelings of freshness, openness, and vibrance that will make your kitchen feel alive! A bold gem-toned green serves as an excellent accent color, whereas a more subtle neutral sage tone will create a balanced kitchen design that brings a hint of nature indoors. At the center point of the color wheel, green adapts well to both cool and warm schemes, which makes it great for an eclectic decorator who needs to tie various hues together.

Hire a Professional Painter

Whether it’s an earth tone, a pastel, or a neutral color, any of these color palettes are sure to leave your small kitchen looking amazing! If you decide to follow these trends or find another paint color palette for your small kitchen, the most important thing is that you love it.

If you feel like you’ve exhausted every color-combination and still aren’t pleased with how your kitchen looks, give us a call! Are you considering installing a new kitchen countertop? If you’re remodeling your kitchen and are looking for a countertop material comparison– look no further! After helping thousands of homeowners with their kitchen remodeling projects in Newton, MA, we’ve discovered which materials make the most durable countertops, the most cost-effective, and the most popular.

In this article we’ll answer some of the top FAQ when it comes to comparing countertops:

  • What is the most durable material for kitchen countertops?
  • What is the most cost effective countertop material?
  • What is the most popular kitchen countertop material?

What is the most durable material for kitchen countertops?

The most durable countertop materials for homeowners with a high-traffic kitchen are quartz and granite. Quartz and granite are both hard stones that are scratch resistant and depending on your preferences for heat and stains one of these stones will make a countertop that will last you a lifetime! Quartz is lighter, stain resistant, and doesn’t require regular maintenance, but you shouldn’t place hot items directly on the surface of the stone. Granite is heavy, a natural stone with natural beauty, highly desired by homebuyers, scratch resistant, heat resistant, but requires annual sealing to keep it in good condition.

What is the Most Cost-Effective Countertop Material?

Despite quartz’s higher upfront cost, it’s the most cost-effective material for your kitchen countertops because:

  • It will last you a lifetime
  • There are no yearly maintenance or upkeep expenses
  • It’s a luxury countertop material which makes it desirable to homebuyers
  • It can increase the value of your home

With all of these benefits, Quartz can get you a higher return on your investment than you will with other countertop materials making this the most cost-effective option for your next kitchen remodel.

What is the Most Popular Countertop Material?

The most popular countertop material in 2022 is granite. As a luxury countertop material granite is top-of-the-line quality and has beautiful natural designs that elevate any space it is installed in. Granite comes in a variety of different styles and colors that can fit any homeowner’s tastes. Granite will last you a lifetime, and despite annual maintenance, homeowners love their granite countertops, and so do homebuyers– granite countertops offer a higher return on your investment.

Granite vs. Quartz vs. Marble, we’ll compare 7 of the most popular countertop materials below, to help you decide which one will work best in your kitchen.

7 Most Popular Countertop Materials

QUARTZ COUNTERTOPS

$$$ | (100+ years)

Quartz countertops deliver a high-class look without the stress of being high maintenance.  Whether you’re going for simplistic and elegant, or dark and modern, you’ll definitely be able to find a color and design that fits your style. Quartz is an engineered stone, so it can be manufactured to look however you’d like it to, leaving you with limitless options when it comes to design. Interested in black stone, or a marble imitation? Quartz is a great option to consider.

Quartz countertops are considered nearly indestructible for regular kitchen use. Able to withstand knife cuts and spill stains with ease, quartz is great for high-traffic kitchens or for homes with young children! As an engineered stone, quartz countertops are made by grinding up the natural stone quartz and combining it with other synthetic materials like resin. The resin is used to bind the quartz together, making it harder and more durable, however– it’s heat sensitive and can melt if a hot pot or pan was placed directly on the countertop material.

GRANITE COUNTERTOPS

$$$ | (100+ years)

Granite is a desired countertop material because of, not only its natural beauty and unique designs, but it’s one of the hardest natural stones available, making it a great option for durable countertops that can withstand the heat from a pan coming off of the stove, and scratches from the blade of a knife. However, despite being able to withstand heat and scratches– a bottle of wine hitting the corner of the countertop could chip the stone. There are many advantages and disadvantages to installing granite in your kitchen– as a high-end countertop material, having granite countertops can actually increase the value of your home, which offsets the annual maintenance expenses that go into caring for the natural stone. As a porous stone, granite needs to be sealed regularly to prevent oil from seeping into the counter and to protect your granite from stains. Overall, granite is a great choice for kitchen countertops!

MARBLE COUNTERTOPS

$$$ | (50+ years)

If you’ve ever wanted your countertops to look like Michelangelo’s sculpture “David” then you’re in luck– marble is a timeless, high-end natural stone that gives any home a classic luxury look. However, marble is considerably softer and more porous than other materials which requires more maintenance than other options– like quartz (which is non-porous). Marble needs to be sealed 1-2 times a year to help prevent scratches and stains. Without proper sealant, the marble is vulnerable to staining agents like wine. Marble best serves lower traffic kitchens, or as an accent counter that can elevate your kitchen without risking damaging your expensive marble countertops.

SOAPSTONE COUNTERTOPS

$$-$$$ | (20 – 50 years)

Not as common as other naturally occurring stone countertop materials, soapstone is one of the most functional countertop materials that you could add to your home. Soapstone can range in shades running from a creamy white to dark gray with subtle or considerable veining so there are options that can suit any homeowner’s style. The rustic and dark appearance of soapstone can add a classic charm to your kitchen due to the antique “patina” that develops over time. A patina is a gloss or sheen that develops on the surface resulting from age or polishing, and it makes the soapstone appear darker. Soapstone has many benefits as a functional kitchen countertop material. It’s heat resistant, so if you find yourself constantly putting hot pans on your kitchen countertops then this would be an ideal material for you. It is also a non-porous stone and doesn’t need to be sealed regularly like marble or granite making it resistant to any spills– including wine and acidic liquids! However, soapstone is also considerably softer than granite, which has pros and cons. The downside is that it’s prone to scratches, but those scratches can easily be sanded out! As a softer stone, it’s also less likely to crack, which is great for anybody who may be accident-prone!

CONCRETE COUNTERTOPS

$$ | (20 years)

While concrete counters don’t sound particularly glamorous, they are extremely durable and considered a  premium upgrade that can be a very stylish addition to any kitchen. Due to the customizability of concrete, it can be made to fit any style from rustic farmhouse to industrial to modern contemporary. With concrete counters, you have the ability to add color, change the shape, or even include inlaid materials like glass or metal to create a design or pattern on the surface. However, similar to marble and granite, concrete countertops are very porous and should be sealed regularly to help protect them from scratches, stains, and bacteria. Even after sealing, concrete is still at risk of staining from wine, coffee, oil, or other acidic foods because it is so porous. Another interesting characteristic of concrete is that over the years it will develop a patina, just like soapstone, so it will gradually develop a darker color. For homeowners who desire a low-maintenance countertop option, concrete would not be an ideal fit for your project; but homeowners who are willing to put in the time and effort to properly take care of them can fall in love with the limitless possibilities that concrete counters have to offer! If you’re seriously considering concrete countertops for your kitchen remodel it would be important to note that it can be difficult to find a reputable contractor to install the counters due to the specialized nature of concrete countertops.

BUTCHER’S BLOCK COUNTERTOPS

$$ | (10-30 years)

Real wood countertops, or butcher blocks, are a classic material that adds warmth and a natural atmosphere to your kitchen. While they may look beautiful, they do have significant drawbacks and aren’t for homeowners who want a low-maintenance countertop. As a soft material, wood can easily scratch, so knives shouldn’t be used on a wooden surface unless you prefer the ‘used’ look. Cracks are also possible if the wood dries out too much, luckily, since it’s wood these things can most likely be sanded out before they become too big of a problem. However, stains are much harder to sand out. Standing water will create discoloration and leave stains on your countertops which makes this a less than ideal material for around a kitchen sink. With all the maintenance that comes with wooden countertops, they aren’t worth the price unless you love and appreciate the look of wood in your kitchen. We’d recommend if you really want a wooden countertop it could serve your kitchen better on an island or somewhere there isn’t a lot of traffic or prep work being done.

LAMINATE COUNTERTOPS

$ | (20 – 30 years)

Perhaps the most budget-friendly option, laminate has changed a lot over the years since its rise to popularity in the 50s. Laminate is available in any color, style, or pattern that you could dream of– even in a faux-marble pattern. However, laminate is not considered a high-end material. If you’re looking for something that will add value to your home, laminate is not a good option– in fact, homebuyers have even declared that they are less likely to purchase a home with laminate countertops. There are benefits to laminate though– if you want a material that doesn’t require regular maintenance and is easy to clean then laminate is a great choice for those who aren’t looking to spend an arm and a leg on a countertop.

As you can see, there are a lot of options to choose from for your kitchen counters (even more than this list). If you’re exploring a kitchen remodel or thinking about changing out your countertops, contact our remodeling consultants to discuss which countertop material works best for you.

Are you wondering, “how long do painted cabinets last?” Cabinet refinishing and painting is one of the most popular home improvement trends in 2022. It’s perfect for homeowners who want a quick makeover but don’t want to take on a full-gut remodel. We come across many homes around Newton with wooden cabinets that are in great shape and have so much character – perfect for cabinet refinishing. Don’t throw away your money by investing in new materials when you might have perfectly good cabinets already in your kitchen. Refinishing your cabinets is a quick way to transform your existing space with just a bit of paint.  Cabinet refacing in MA is a cost-effective remodeling alternative that can transform your kitchen without all the fuss of demolishing old cabinets and ordering new ones.

Newton Cabinet Painting Company

How Long Will Painted Cabinets Last?

With proper care of professionally painted kitchen cabinets, you can expect your newly painted cabinets to last 8-10 years! While new cabinets will last you much longer, they will also cost thousands more, which can be an unnecessary expense in some cases. By refinishing or painting your cabinets rather than replacing them, you can put that budget towards other aspects of your remodel. If you’re the type of homeowner that likes to redesign their home every decade or so, then this remodeling option is perfect for you. Cabinet painting gives homeowners a durable, long-lasting product at half of the cost of buying new! In 8-10 years you might be selling your house, or you might want to change your cabinets again, so if you don’t need new cabinets, consider cabinet painting for a quick makeover.

What Affects How Long Painted Cabinets Last?

Although professionally painted cabinets should last 8-10 years there are a few factors that can drastically impact your cabinet’s lifetime, requiring repainting only 3-4 years later. How long your kitchen cabinets will last depends largely on the way the paint was applied, and with what tools.  To ensure the best results, hire a professional painter who follows a tested process, uses the best tools, and is meticulous about keeping your home protected. That said, even with the best painter providing the best paint job, your cabinets may start to show signs of wear due to natural elements over time. Cabinets that are in high-traffic areas of your home will naturally start to deteriorate sooner than those that you don’t frequently open.

If you’re considering refinishing versus replacing, read more to understand what factors would impact how long the painted cabinets may last.

Professional Cabinet Painting Company Newton MA

Hiring A Cabinet Painter Who Pays Attention to Detail

If you hire a painter who cuts corners and doesn’t properly prepare your cabinets before painting, your cabinets will not last the expected 8-10 years. In order to achieve a factory-finish look, it’s important to hire a professional cabinet refinishing company that will be thorough and meticulous when it comes to the cabinet painting process. Preparation is an important step for any task, but it’s especially critical when painting cabinets to ensure a quality finish that will last. If cabinets are improperly prepped or painted, they won’t last longer than a couple years.

Our process begins by setting up floor and wall protection around the entire room, so the dust and smell doesn’t permeate the rest of the home. We completely seal off the room with plastic protection and zipper walls for easy access when needed. It’s important to set up proper ventilation to create a negative airflow pushing the air out of the home. Once the room has been properly sealed off and every inch has been protected, it’s time to get to work on the cabinets!

We’ll begin removing all of the cabinet faces and hardware. Once the doors and drawers have been removed, we’ll scrape and sand them using HEPA dust-extracting sanders to ensure no excess dust gets in your home. One major step that many painters neglect, is applying grain filler to the cabinets. This extra step is the difference between seeing wood grains poking through the final paint job, or having a smooth, factory-finish look that feels brand new. If the wood has especially deep grains, we’ll repeat these steps multiple times to create a smooth, factory-finish.

Finally, once the cabinets have been prepared, we apply two coats of primer and three (or more) coats of lacquer to the cabinets. We apply at least three coats of lacquer to ensure that there is a thick finish that is durable enough to last. While you might be tempted to try and ‘DIY’ painting your kitchen cabinets, if you’re not willing to dedicate the time, energy, and cost for materials, then you’re better off hiring a professional.

Hiring a Cabinet Painter with the Right Tools

For long-lasting results, cabinet painting requires adequate experience, technical expertise, and the correct tools. Unfortunately, it’s you and your cabinets that will suffer the consequences if you hire a painter that cuts corners by using cheap products, or not applying grain filler in hopes to saving themselves a few bucks. Many painters skimp on buying the nicer products because it saves them money, but unfortunately it ultimately costs the homeowner by producing a subpar result.

Painters have a range of tools available to them for the application process which can produce different finishes and styles; for example, using a sprayer will yield different results than using a hand brush. A spray brush creates a solid finish on uneven surfaces without leaving any texture– ideal for cabinet painting, whereas brushes and rollers leave texture marks from the application process that can look messy and unfinished– not something that you want to be looking at on your kitchen cabinets.

There are also tools outside of the application process that are very important to the safety of your family and your home. It’s not adequate for your painter to put a drop cloth down and paint your cabinets – it’s unsafe with all of the fumes. HEPA dustless- vacuums, large window fans, zipper walls and plastic wrap are all needed to avoid a long-lasting dust and smell problem in your home. Without proper setup and protection, your home will smell like dust and paint for months or years.

Deterioration in High-Traffic Kitchens

Your kitchen is a high-traffic area, so naturally, your cabinets will show signs of wear over time, whether re-painted or brand-new. The cabinet faces that you use most frequently– around the trash, stove, and sink, will show signs of aging much sooner than others. Chipping or cracking, discoloration of the paint, and wear on the finish are common signs of aging that can appear on your cabinets if they’re not well maintained. Most often you’ll notice these signs appearing around the cabinet’s hardware as a result of the oils from our hands being deposited on the painted surface when we open and close cabinets.

Kitchen cabinets are constantly being exposed to everyday grime like oily fingerprints and dirty hands – especially if you have little ones running around! Homeowners that frequently cook on their range also have to worry about the little grease and oil splatters that naturally get on their cabinets and backsplash.

If you’re concerned that your kitchen is in a high-traffic area and that your cabinets won’t last the full 8-10 years, don’t worry! Even cabinets in high-traffic areas can last a long time as long as you’re keeping up with light maintenance. Every so often you should wipe down the cabinet faces with some water, soap, and a microfiber cloth to ensure that all the grease and oils are removed from the cabinet faces and they’ll keep their new look longer.

Remodeling your kitchen can be a daunting task, especially when you don’t know how long you’ll be kicked out of that part of your home. With such a big project there are a lot of people and materials to coordinate, but with kitchens being one of the highest-trafficked areas in your home, remodeling is certainly worth the trouble. By getting new cabinets, refinishing the floors, or upgrading your old appliances, you can dramatically alter the appearance of your kitchen! It may seem impossible to function without the use of your kitchen, even if only temporarily, but we make the process as painless as possible.

If you’re considering a kitchen remodel then you’re probably asking these questions:

In this article we’ll address all of these questions and share our best practices for how we try to keep your kitchen remodel on schedule.

How long does a kitchen remodel take?Bright Modern Tidy Kitchen Remodel

An average kitchen remodel can take 6-10 weeks to finish once it’s in our production team’s hands. However, this doesn’t account for the full extent of your project; Tom Curren Companies is a design-build company, which means that our project consultants will help you design your dream kitchen before our crews start building it. Our project consultants will help you decide on every detail of your kitchen, from the color of the wall paint to what type of cabinet hardware you want. From the time you call Tom Curren Companies and complete our intake process to the day construction actually begins, it might be weeks or months. It all depends on the scope of your project, how quickly you’re able to make decisions, and the lead times on the  materials you want to order.

Right now we are seeing unprecedented wait times for cabinets, specialty tiles, and certain sinks and faucets. Trendy and popular items tend to have higher wait times than cabinets without any customizable options. At Tom Curren Companies, one way that we try to make this process easier for you is by waiting for all of your materials to be delivered to our warehouse before we begin work on your home. This reduces the amount of time we have to spend waiting around because a piece of material hasn’t arrived yet– we’ll be prepared for your project before it begins! We know that waiting for your new kitchen can be difficult though, so if you want to keep your remodeling timeline short, you can explore other options.! Because of our relationship with numerous suppliers, we can look at different wait times for similar cabinets and suggest which one may work best for you. Or maybe you don’t need new cabinets– you could potentially refinish your cabinets and cut out all of the excessive wait time.

Cabinet Painting For Newton Kitchen RemodelThe scope of work that is required is the biggest influence on your actual production timeline. 6-10 weeks is the  average length of a kitchen remodel, but depending on the scope of work,  it may take longer than this. For example, if you want to change the layout of your kitchen by relocating or opening a wall, then that will add a significant amount of time to your project. Especially considering that once we open a wall, we might encounter unforeseen setbacks  like unexpected wiring or piping running through the walls, which will delay your project until it’s properly addressed. Before your project begins, our project consultants will discuss your kitchen remodel’s scope of work with you in depth, and will provide you with a project-specific timeline. If your goal is to make your kitchen better for entertaining, then our team will help you make decisions that help you achieve that goal.

What are the different stages of a kitchen remodel?

Newton Design-Build Remodel

There are two main stages of a kitchen remodel which are each broken down further into smaller steps.

Stage 1: Design

Stage 2: Build

The Design phase starts from the second you call Tom Curren Companies to inquire about your project! It might surprise you, but while the construction portion of your project only takes 6-10 weeks the pre-production, design phase,  can take the same – if not longer! Our project consultants will meet with you several times, and over the course of those visits they’ll learn as much as they can about you and your project. Then, we’ll get to work designing the kitchen of your dreams! We want your kitchen remodel to meet every one of your expectations, which is why we are thorough, and take the time to discuss all of the important details before your project even starts.

With a project as big as a kitchen remodel there are a lot of decisions to be made. First, you’ll discuss  your budget, the scope of work, and what you’re hoping to . Then, we’ll get to work helping you make the fun choices like the color of your walls, the finish on your cabinet’s hardware, what kind of material you want for your countertops. Once you decide on the  design selections, we will order the materials right away, so you aren’t waiting months on end. It’s hard to believe, but with all of the supply chain issues, you could be waiting 16 weeks for cabinets to be delivered due to longer lead times; that’s double the time it takes to actually build your new kitchen!

The Build phase begins after all of your materials have been delivered –  job site preparations and demolition mark the beginning of the 6-10 week “construction” phase. Between all of the trade partners involved, kitchen remodels have many moving parts that all need to happen sequentially in order for the project to run smoothly. After our team demos your kitchen we bring in our trade partners– plumbers and electricians, to begin their rough layouts and installations. Once that is complete,  town inspectors must do a site visit to make sure that the plumbing and electrical is up to code. This typically happens about a few days or weeks after the demo is complete, but sometimes can be delayed based on how backed up the town inspectors are. It’s critical that we don’t skip any of these important steps, so if the inspector isn’t available for a few days, then the project comes to a halt until they can take a look. The same is true for some of the other work that we have to do– cabinets must be fully installed before we can install your countertops and backsplash.. Any delays ultimately push the whole project back, but we do our best to keep things running as smoothly as possible, and address any setbacks that arise, promptly.

Will supply chain issues affect my kitchen remodel timeline?

Bright White Modern Cozy Kitchen Remodel

Yes–supply chain issues will affect your kitchen remodeling timeline. During the lockdowns at the beginning of the pandemic, people spent more time in their homes thinking about the rooms they’ve always wanted to remodel. The demand for lumber has skyrocketed, but due to shutdowns in early 2020, lumber yards couldn’t keep up with the demand, creating the supply shortages that we are still dealing with today.

At Tom Curren Companies, we do our best to have these issues affect you as little as possible. Unlike other contractors, we don’t start demolition of your kitchen until all of the materials for your new kitchen have been delivered to our warehouse in Newton. We do this to ensure that material prices don’t go up, and so we can lock in the quickest lead-times for you. It also avoids our teams needing to stop mid-project to order and wait for more materials.

One way to speed up your kitchen remodel is to avoid materials with long lead times, like cabinets! Before COVID-19, cabinet lead times were typically 3-4 weeks, and have since increased to double, if not triple, that! If your cabinets are still in great shape, painting them is a great way to completely avoid dealing with these long lead times.  Painting or refinishing your cabinets can transform the look of your kitchen while keeping your overall budget low,  and dramatically shortening the timeline of your kitchen remodel.

When is the best time to remodel your kitchen?

Kitchen Remodel BacksplashThe best time to start your kitchen remodeling project is now! And who better to work with than kitchen remodeling experts like Tom Curren Companies. The earlier you begin your process with us, the sooner you can start cooking in your brand new kitchen. Don’t wait to see if prices drop or lead times get shorter, since COVID we’ve seen a 15%-20% increase in prices, and nobody knows when or if the prices will ever come back down again.

Tom Curren Companies has 35 years of experience remodeling kitchens in Newton, MA! We want to make sure that you receive the kitchen of your dreams. Every year there are new kitchen design trends, and 2023 is no different. While some kitchen elements are timeless, like stainless steel appliances, some features fade in and out of popularity each year. As a result of the ongoing global pandemic, we have seen changes in the way homeowners are making use of their kitchens. With an increased desire for spacious kitchen islands ideal for work-from-home setups. Here are the must-have design trends for 2023:

Longer Kitchen Islands

One of the hottest trends of 2023 is longer kitchen islands! A lot of newly installed kitchen islands measure over 7 feet long! Longer kitchen islands are ideal for everyday kitchen use, work from home, and provide additional underhand cabinet storage.

Closed Concept Floor Plan

With working from home and remote learning becoming the new norm for many people, there is a greater desire for more privacy within the home. More people are opting not to have open concept floor plans for their kitchen remodels. Instead, favoring closed concept remodels that allow for quiet environments ideal for those working/learning from home.

Investing More In Counter Tops

Not only are longer countertops increasing in popularity, but homeowners are notably splurging more on the material of their counter as well. Natural non-engineered stones are slowly gaining popularity over-engineered stones. Investing in your countertop is a decision that will elevate your kitchen remodel and be a gorgeous addition to your home.

Cabinet Organization

Spending more time at home has made homeowners prioritize decluttering their spaces. There is a rise in the popularity of specialty organizing cabinets and drawer organizers with that in mind. Installing these cabinets is a great way to maximize the space you already have and is a great way to revamp your kitchen design.

What better time to take on a new remodeling project than Spring? The weather is nice and mild, and it represents a time for renewal and change. Spring is the perfect time to get ready for the summer, and a remodel can help make the warm months even better. How do you go about taking on the Spring remodel project? Depending on the scale of the project, it may not be as simple a task. There needs to be a level of planning and organization when planning your remodel if you want things to go smoothly. Here’s a step-by-step look at how to plan your Spring remodel.

Start Off with a Vision for Your RemodelNewton Design-Build Remodel

It’s crucial to know what you want from the get-go. What are your goals and expectations for your remodel project? Create a list of things that you want to include in your remodel, like “must haves” and “want”. Think of it as a wish list and be as detailed as possible. Do you want your new space to be cozy and intimate or open and airy? Think about color and fixtures and anything else that you’d like to include in remodeling your space.

Prioritize Important Features of Your Remodel

Draw on your list of wants and needs prioritize to keep things on track. Like with many projects, you cannot accomplish all that you have in mind to do. Think of your budget and the amount of time that you have to complete it. Prioritize getting the features that are most important to you and work on those first. The less important features can be tackled further down the line. Is this a DIY project, or do you need a licensed contractor for the job? Prioritize, prioritize, and prioritize!

Set a Budget and Determine a Timeline

Kitchen Remodelers in Newton, MA

You have to think about your budget and timeline when planning your remodel project. If you are limited to a budget, you have to be careful about spending. You don’t want to put yourself in trouble by running out of money before your project is completed. How much time do you have to complete the project?

You may find that time and money are both limited and that you have to work a bit harder to stay within the boundary of what’s possible. If you find that you have to budget, accept that reality. You may have to be a bit creative in your approach to your project if you want it to be a success.

Shop Around for Contractors and Compare

Rather than go with the first contractor you come across, it’s smart to check out a few different contractors to find the right fit for your project. Keep your goals and budget in mind at this stage in the process. A low bid from a contractor shouldn’t quickly appeal to you since you may end up getting exactly what you pay for. If a contractor underbids, you may find that the contractor doesn’t have much experience or that the quality of the materials may be subpar. Do your homework when looking for a contract for your home remodel project by checking out online reviews and testimonials, finding out how many years of experience the contractor has working on similar projects, and confirming that the contractor has the proper license and certifications.

Let Tom Curren Companies be your number one guide for your next remodel project. We have the right team of skilled and capable professionals to make your remodel project a success. Schedule your Spring remodels with our team now.

Your activities reduce greatly in winter, making it the best time for you to remodel your home. Indeed the winter weather can be harsh, but it shouldn’t be an excuse not to get your home renovated. Since the distractive activities aren’t in view, you can adopt these DIY home remodeling ideas to keep yourself busy. The advantage of engaging in home remodeling projects in winter is you can do it at a relatively low cost.

Below are a few renovation projects suitable during freezing temperatures:

Remodel Key Spaces

It could be the living room, the kitchen, or the bathroom; you can maximize your time to change how they appear. The rooms aren’t the same size, so the remodeling costs depend on what you choose. For example, suppose you intend to remodel your bathroom. In that case, the budget will be relatively lower than what you will spend renovating your kitchen. Updating the hardware in this room can light out any of the rooms you decide to remodel.

Work on the Walls

Winter is the perfect moment for interior painting projects as opposed to summer and spring. The freshly painted room tends to dry faster during this period. Additionally, you can get a bucket of paint at a lesser price in winter. This implies you are getting more value while you are paying less. Changing wall colors occasionally brings a home to life.

Insulate the Rooms

The best time for winter-proofing projects is at that time when it is happening. You can determine your home insulation needs effectively because everything becomes glaring. Insulation projects prevent you from spending excessively on utility bills the whole season. Insulation types and materials determine the cost you will incur. The first step to get your home insulated is doing home energy audits. It helps to know your home insulation needs.

Adding more Rooms

It’s normal for families to grow. As this happens, the available rooms might not be enough for everyone. You can leverage the winter season to create more rooms with an addition if you have no intention to relocate.

Complete the Basement

Understandably, you have been busy during summer and spring, making it difficult to complete your basement. Winter offers you the time you need to give your basement the final touch. A well-designed basement adds value to a property. A home remodeling project in the basement is relatively easy to plan because it’s a typical blank space.

If you’re ready to remodel your home, our team at Tom Curren Companies is ready to help. Contact us today to schedule a consultation

Vinyl floors have become a very popular option for homeowners, especially in high traffic areas like the mudroom, kitchen, or bathroom. If you have a remodel project coming up, or are just looking to switch up the floors, vinyl is definitely an option you should consider.

Here are some of the main benefits of using vinyl flooring in your home:

Vinyl Flooring is Waterproof

Vinyl flooring is waterproof, so it can be an advantage to use in kitchens, where spills are common, or mudrooms, where water may be tracked inside. If you’re a parent of young children, consider adding vinyl flooring to your kids’ bathroom, where water is sure to splash all over! Another great place to use vinyl is in your basement, where people often experience water damage from storms or flooding.

Vinyl Flooring is Durable

Most vinyl flooring has commercial grade wear layers protecting it, making it extremely hard to scratch and damage. This means your flooring will likely have the same appearance for years, even if it’s in an area that gets a lot of traffic. Although it’s durable for everyday use, your vinyl floors can be punctured or dented if something sharp is dropped on them, or if heavy furniture is moved across them without any protection.

Vinyl Flooring is Easy to Clean & Maintain

It is very easy to maintain vinyl flooring when compared to other flooring options – it doesn’t take much more than regularly sweeping or mopping. If you’re dealing with a mudroom where a lot of water drops are brought in from outside, vinyl flooring is a perfect option because it’s waterproof!

Vinyl Flooring Options for Every Style

You don’t have to compromise looks for utility when choosing vinyl flooring. Vinyl flooring is almost unlimited when it comes to design options, so you are sure to find a style that suits what you like. Many of the vinyl wood plank options look almost identical to real hardwood flooring these days!

If you’re thinking of changing up your floors, vinyl is a great option to consider. Be sure to keep in mind what you’ll be using the space for, and how much ongoing maintenance you want to do. Give our team a call to discuss your next project and all flooring options to find the best one for you – 617-969-4900.

Open floor plans are a growing trend in residential construction, especially in older New England homes that tend to feel more closed off. Open concept floor plans are when two or more common spaces are joined to form a larger space, which usually requires removing walls. This can be tricky, because some walls are load-bearing, and carry the weight of the roof and upper floors.

Creating an open floor plan typically involves combining the kitchen, living, and dining spaces to create a central gathering spot. If you’re considering an open floor plan in your home, here are a few of the advantages:

Open floor plans create more functional space

Removing walls attached to your kitchen provides new opportunities to incorporate an island or peninsula for added storage and seating. As a parent, it also allows you to keep an eye on your children in the other room while you prepare dinner in the kitchen, or get some work done.

Open floor plans create entertaining space

Having more open space and continuity between rooms makes it easier to spend time with family and friends. Open floor plans create more connecting areas to gather off the kitchen, so you can mingle with your guests while still keeping a close eye on the food.

Open floor plans increase visibility

When interior walls are taken down, you can more easily see into the next room without having to open any doors or walk down the hallway. Having open space also allows natural light to travel throughout the interior rooms, so you may not need to use as much overhead lighting throughout the day.

As a homeowner, envisioning a beautiful new open living space can be a little bit tricky because all you see are walls, and you don’t know where to start. When it comes to removing walls, you should always work with a professional so you don’t risk compromising the structural integrity of your home. Our team will help you explore options, show you drawings, and work with you to match your design choices with functional, stable solutions. Call us to schedule a free consultation about creating an open floor plan in your home 617-969-4900.
