Choosing paint colors for your small kitchen can be one of the hardest decisions you have to make while renovating. In recent years, all-white kitchens emerged as a major kitchen trend that many homeowners were choosing during remodeling and painting projects. White kitchens are great for homeowners who want a bright kitchen with a clean look that also makes your small kitchen feel more open. However, if you’re looking to add a little color to your kitchen, we have some small kitchen paint color suggestions to get you inspired!

There are thousands of options, and if you don’t already have an idea of what color you’d like to go with, it can be an intimidating process. Before deciding on a color scheme, it’s important to understand how certain colors can influence your space. For example, if you have a smaller kitchen there are certain color palettes that will be more flattering in your kitchen than others. Whether you prefer boldly saturated gem-tones or subtle beachy neutrals, the right color combinations can drastically change your space.

So where do you start when deciding on a small kitchen paint color palette? Natural colors are the central idea behind many of the current design trends and the best paint colors for small kitchens in 2022. If you have a small kitchen, here are some ideas for colors that can inspire you with your next kitchen remodeling project in Newton, MA!

Light Paint Colors in Your Kitchen

Small Kitchen Paint Colors White Cabinets

If you have a small kitchen, you may want to avoid painting it a dark color. Dark colors can make your kitchen feel even more enclosed and claustrophobic – which isn’t how you want to feel in a space that’s already tight. One trick to make your space feel larger is using lighter colors, like neutrals or pastels in your kitchen’s color scheme. Where dark colors absorb natural light to make a room feel smaller, neutrals and pastels do the opposite and reflect the light that is available.

Neutral Kitchen Colors

Many homeowners have gravitated towards using colors that make their space feel cozy rather than crisp. Especially if you have a small kitchen, you want to be paying attention to how colors are interacting inside the space. Warm-toned neutrals can evoke feelings of coziness because of the red and yellow hues that are reminiscent of the sun or heat, and blue and greens can create feelings of peacefulness.

Neutrals like oatmeal, buttermilk, or sand are in high demand for kitchens in Newton, MA. Warm-toned off-white colors allow light to bounce around without giving a room the same sterile feeling that cool-toned whites can have. Neutrals are also a great option for kitchens because, in addition to brightening up your space, they’re easy to decorate. Neutral colors pair well with a range of colors and design elements, and complement any decorating style from modernism to art deco and more.

Pastel Kitchen Paint Colors

Pastels are popular in kitchens because they have the same brightening effect as off-whites. having a clean, visual appeal. Whether you want to give your walls or your cabinets a little pop, or just a subtle hint of color, pastels have the ability to inject a lot of personality into your kitchen without sacrificing design flexibility.

Small Kitchen Paint Colors

By color drenching your kitchen with a monochromatic palette, you can transform your small kitchen into a contemporary dream. A low-contrast color scheme makes your kitchen appear larger by creating a flow throughout the entire room. Without a large pop of color to break up different surfaces, a low-contrast color scheme in your small kitchen aids to the illusion of lengthening the walls and space.

If you’re wondering how to blend a small kitchen with a living room paint color, using a low-contrast color scheme will help you do so seamlessly. Blending a small kitchen with adjoining living room paint colors can be tricky to accomplish, especially when using severely contrasting colors. In this case, lighter colors will likely be your best friend, leaving the whole space looking and feeling larger.

Two-Toned Kitchen Cabinets

Two-toned cabinets are a hot design trend that creates depth in your kitchen by creating the illusion of sections with different paint colors. This stylistic approach can easily make a small kitchen appear more spacious without necessarily doing anything more than painting a set of cabinets – which can save you thousands of dollars and time on your kitchen renovation. If you’d like to achieve the two-toned cabinet look, consider painting your cabinets, there are many small kitchen paint colors to combinations to consider.

Small Kitchen Remodel Cabinet Painting

If you have an island in your kitchen, consider creating a focal-point shift by painting the island a different color than the rest of the cabinets. If you don’t have an island, you can still accomplish the two-toned kitchen look by painting the bottom cabinets a different color than the top. Be sure to keep the darker color on the bottom cabinets so that the top cabinets don’t overpower the room and make it feel topheavy. By keeping darker colors and finishes on the bottom, and lighter colors on the top you’ll have a more open feel.

Simplify the Color Palette in Your Kitchen

When deciding which small kitchen paint colors are right for your home, you need to decide on a color palette. For your small kitchen, it’s best to limit the colors to just one or two principal shades. A simple two-tone color palette or a monochromatic scheme prevents a small kitchen from getting overwhelmed and muddled with too many colors. By limiting your color palette and selectively using darker or bolder colors, you can create a dynamic kitchen design that distracts from the size of the kitchen, and refocuses on the design and use of color.

Any color you decide on will ultimately look great combined with a soft neutral, or white. These are a few small kitchen paint colors to combine with white cabinets if you’re looking to change the color of your lower cabinets while keeping your upper cabinets white.

Earth Tone Paint Colors in Kitchen

Earth tones and natural colors form refreshing color schemes in small kitchens and can make a huge difference in how your space is perceived. Earth tones are nature-inspired colors that contain some brown pigment. The hint of brown in earth tones creates a warming effect that mutes the appearance of the colors, making them feel comforting and cozy. Typical earthy tones that you may be familiar with are terracotta, sage, yellow ochre, turmeric, charcoal, tape, dusty blush, etc. Using these earthy colors in your small kitchen can make the space feel calm and inviting.

Blues are another natural, versatile color tone that doesn’t tend to overpower a small kitchen. From a classic, deep navy to a stunning and bright turquoise, any shade of blue is sure to make a splash in your kitchen. The color blue has natural recessive properties that draw the eyes outwards, giving the impression of a never-ending space like the ocean, or sky. Blue is a very calming color, creating a relaxing atmosphere to cook and entertain.

Green Kitchen Paint Colors

Green is a great color to introduce to your small kitchen if you want to invigorate your space. Small kitchens can feel cramped and overcrowded, but by using the color green in your design you can invoke feelings of freshness, openness, and vibrance that will make your kitchen feel alive! A bold gem-toned green serves as an excellent accent color, whereas a more subtle neutral sage tone will create a balanced kitchen design that brings a hint of nature indoors. At the center point of the color wheel, green adapts well to both cool and warm schemes, which makes it great for an eclectic decorator who needs to tie various hues together.

Craving a fresh, new color of paint on your walls? If you’re in the market for a new paint color, you’ve come to the right place. Paint is one of the most versatile decorating tools at your fingertips. With endless options for you to choose from, the right color palette for your home is out there, but choosing the color can be the hardest part for many homeowners. In this article, we’ve answered homeowners’ most frequently asked questions about choosing the right interior paint color.

How do I choose paint colors for my house?

Bathroom Remodel in Belmont, MA

Several studies have been conducted on the psychology of color, showing how different colors can influence our moods or emotions. When it comes to choosing paint colors, it’s important to understand how different colors resonate with you and your family. So, before heading straight to the paint store to grab paint swatches and samples, think about what type of atmosphere you want to create in the rooms you are painting.

For bedrooms – light blues, warm neutrals, or colors with gray undertones are popular because they evoke feelings of calmness and relaxation. On the other hand, warm brown and deep oranges are great for family rooms or living spaces, because they are seen as more welcoming and social colors.

There are no rules when it comes to choosing a paint color for your home – it’s  yours to decorate the way you like! What adjectives come to mind when you’re imagining your dream home? Cozy and inviting for your family to gather in during the holidays? Sleek and modern dining room to show off at dinner parties? Possibilities are endless. Here are a few examples of colors to consider:

How to choose a paint color Newton MA

What paint colors are in for 2023?

Every year, color experts compile color palettes that consider the trending current design, art, culture, and environment, among other factors. Deep, earthy tones dominated trends from 2021 to 2022. In 2023, we saw more nature-inspired hues, retro bright colors, and timeless neutrals being used to create welcoming, yet personalized spaces. We love when homeowners take advantage of the opportunity to express themselves and their personalities through color and design.

Professional Interior Painting Natick, MANature tones have continued to be popular in 2023, with the focus of bringing the serenity of nature indoors. Taupe, terra-cotta, olive greens, and sandy neutrals are a must-have for homeowners who want to inject a bit of the wilderness into their home.

Bold bright colors have also been thriving in 2023. These bold, bright hues give off a vibrant and energizing atmosphere that is full of personality. For homeowners who love a pop of color and aren’t afraid to take a risk, go retro with your color choices. You can always change the color again when the trends change in a few years!

How do I choose a coordinating paint color?

Bathroom Remodel in Wellesley, MAUsing colors from different elements in your home that you already love is a great way to create a color scheme that is unique to you. Look at the furniture, artwork, and textiles in the room around your home. Is there a patterned rug, piece of furniture, throw pillow, or a piece of art that you love? Use those things as inspiration to pick a few colors that you could see as potential wall colors. If you have a beige couch in the living room, you might consider using a similar color wall color in an adjoining or adjacent room, to continue the flow of color throughout your home.

When you’re trying to incorporate multiple colors in your home’s color palette while trying to maintain consistency throughout, muted colors are a great option. The undertones of muted, dustier colors help create a visual connection between the various rooms in your house. By simply muddying the colors, they become less bold and bright, making it easier on the eyes.

Should I paint all walls the same color?

There is no right or wrong answer to this question– painting all of your walls the same color will create a cohesive and clean aesthetic throughout, which is why many homeowners opt for this look!

Interior Foyer Painting in Bedford, MA

If you’re not ready to commit to a full room of color, there are still plenty of ways to incorporate color into your home – like creating an accent wall. If you’ve never heard of an accent wall, it is a single wall in a room that is painted a different color than the other walls. Accent walls serve as a focal point where they can shift attention to a specific area or to certain details in a room. This is a great design element for anybody who wants to incorporate a dark or bold color into their interior design without painting an entire room.

Color is a great way to highlight and enhance any unique architectural details you have in your home. From molding and doors, to built-in bookshelves and wainscotting, architectural details provide the opportunity to add layers of color and depth. White and off-white have traditionally been the go-to color choices for interior molding, window trim, and doors, but now more than ever we are seeing homeowners choose bold paint colors in these areas.

One way you can experiment with color in your home is to paint the moldings or doorways one shade lighter or darker than the color of the walls. If you have wainscotting in your home you could also split the room by painting below the wainscotting a darker, bolder color, and above the wainscotting a lighter more neutral color, which will create a beautiful two-tone room that emphasizes your wainscotting and incorporates more color.

What is the Best Paint Finish To Use?

When it comes to painting there are also different finishes for you to consider– flat, satin, and semi-gloss. Traditionally, satin, also known as “eggshell”,  has been painters’ and homeowners’ choice of interior wall finish because it is “scrubbable” while also managing not to draw attention to any imperfections. Walls are scratched, bumped, and nicked all the time, and the satin finish prevents this damage from being visible, whereas a flat finish would expose this damage. Modern flat finishes have more stain resistance which makes them desirable for kitchen spaces, but due to the lack of luster, it’s easy to see any little imperfection, which makes them less desirable.

There are also semi-gloss and high gloss finishes. These finishes are more ‘shiny’ than the other paints because they reflect more light. Typically, we do not have many clients requesting semi-gloss or high gloss finish for their walls. However, instead of leaving the semi-gloss and high gloss finishes to the trim, you can experiment and create interesting visual effects with the different finishes. For example, if you were to paint your walls in Benjamin Moore’s 2022 Color of the Year, October Mist 1495 with a flat finish, and your ceiling that same color with a semi-gloss finish then you would create a visual contrast between the matte and sheen that not only creates a color-drenched effect, but it also makes your ceiling appear higher because of the more reflective properties of semi-gloss.

Paint color is a significant element when it comes to house design and giving it that added wow factor. There’s more to color than simply different pigments. Colors can impact a space in a number of ways, such as creating a certain mood/feel, or making it appear larger or smaller than its actual size. You want your home to feel warm and inviting and certain colors can do just that for your home no matter the season. Here’s a look at some paint colors that will warm up your home.

Colors That Reminds You of a Hot Summer Day

What colors are associated with a hot summer day? Red and yellow are colors that are typically used to represent the sun, fire, or heat. Warmth and comfort are also denoted by the paint color brown. Red and yellow as stand-alone colors would be less than ideal for painting your home during the winter because they are overly vibrant. However, you can still benefit from using colors that have reddish and yellowish undertones. Natural browns denote warmth and comfort and can help to create a cozy feeling in your home, as well as creamy whites, beiges, and toned-down reds, which could serve as accent colors too.

Warm Color Combinations

It can be a challenge choosing the right paint color for your home when you want to achieve the feeling of warmth. Before you head to the paint store think about how you can play with color palettes and achieve the warm feeling that you seek from your choice of paint color. Color combinations can help you to achieve that end if you make the right pairing. For instance, deep green-grey and creamy white trim colors can work together to give off warmth in any season.

How about pairing aqua with warm browns, or classic cream with shades of honey, or basic beige with mustard yellow? These can work to evoke more than just the feeling of warmth to your space, but to also add interest as well.

Warm Paint Colors That Can Do the Trick

It’s not all about whites and grays when it comes to colors that can warm up your home. Neutrals like brown and tan. Porpoise is a beautiful dark brown paint color that contains hints of gray and green. You can get enough drama from this color without overwhelming the space. Natural tones often complement each other, other features, and decor in a home.

Every year comes with a different paint trend. 2021 saw bronze shade, blue, and orange taking the limelight as named by top brands. The choice of these colors was on the backdrop that they indicate peace, comfort, ease, and calmness. 2022 is here, and things have changed so fast. The paint industry and enthusiasts around the globe reached an agreement on the interior paint color expectation for the current year.

Here are the trending colors:

Color Green

Green is the color because it is a hue that embodies the excitement for a renewal sense with an atmosphere of restoration. Benjamin Moore’s Color of the Year 2022 is silvery-green, which can easily adapt to any surroundings. According to Magno, green nurtures and invigorates an interior, making it blend easily with furniture. It highlights the present earthy tones in a living space.

Shades of Gray

Suppose you intend to switch out your interior décor during weather changes from summer to winter. In that case, the shade of gray is the perfect color to consider. It’s a bit lighter than pure gray. The dark and impactful statement it makes during the cold season can blow you away. Best suited for an edgy accent wall in an entryway. It’s another earthy hue with a deep and moody tone for indoors.

Babouche

This is the choice at Farrow & Balls Color of the Year 2022. If you want to illuminate your home, the exquisite yellow color hue is the one to consider. It doesn’t overpower the interior despite being bright and bold. This is the recommendation for homeowners with larger rooms. To get the best out of this color in your room, you can combine it with schoolhouse white. It offers a folksy and simple feel when coated on the wall. It looks good on the bath panel and floors too.

Breezeway

Brands defined Breezeway as an uplifting sea glass green based on its ability to promote a sense of tranquility. An additional consideration for Behr’s 2022 Color of the Year is its versatility, making it easy to pair with different colors. If you are a DIY person, you can develop top-notch interior designs with Breezeway using the 2022 trends palette. The presence of Breezeway in homes announces peace and serenity.

Conclusion

Bringing the best out of your room isn’t difficult after all. It will help if you stay updated with the interior paint trend as it unfolds. If you need to get your home interior painted, Tom Curren Companies can help you select a color and paint your home beautifully. Contact us today.

Painting your home is a great way to bring new life to an outdated space. From adding a statement wall to one room to repainting the whole exterior, there really are endless painting possibilities! Painting is not as easy as just slapping a new color on a wall though. There’s a lot of preparation and work that goes into the job to achieve a great end result. Certain areas are especially hard to reach, so how are you supposed to paint them?! There’s no simple answer, but these tips will make this tricky task a lot easier!

Prepare Before You paint

Take plenty of time to prepare the space you’re going to paint before you start. With hard-to-reach areas, the less careful you have to be, the better! That means taping off corners, outlet covers, and any other areas that aren’t meant to be painted. Remove wall hangings and cover the flooring with plastic sheeting. Furniture should be moved or covered too. Prepare the space so you can focus on getting the paint where it needs to go without worrying about causing damage to other items in the process.

Add Extenders to Brushes and Rollers

Brush and roller extenders are extremely helpful tools for painting hard-to-reach areas. Extenders attach to your painting supplies to give you more reach without climbing on a ladder. This makes the job less physically demanding too! The only downside to using extenders is that the further away you are from your brush or roller, the harder it is to control.

Get a Good Ladder

Extenders are a great tool, but they won’t work for intricate spaces and can’t reach every height. Invest in a good ladder at the start of your painting project. A ladder you feel comfortable on that provides a good level of height will give you the ability to reach the places where your extenders can’t. You’ll also be able to get closer to areas that require close attention that an extender won’t provide.

Hire a Professional

If all of this preparation and purchasing tools to make the paint job a DIY project sounds too overwhelming, hire a professional! Hiring a professional is the easiest way to get your painting project done with minimal stress and time taken out of your day. By the time you purchase all the tools you’ll need to reach high areas, a DIY painting project won’t be much cheaper than hiring someone who already has the tools they need. You’ll also be able to sit back and relax, knowing that the end result will look great!

Contact Tom Curren Companies today to schedule a consultation to discuss your interior or exterior painting needs. Our team has years of experience and all the tools needed to reach even the most difficult places!

Paint Chalking on Interior Walls

Paint chalking on interior walls is when a powdery pigment residue resides on the surface of a coat of paint. This also comes with a loss of gloss or sheen and fading of the paint. Interior paint chalking is normal for the most part over time and preferable to paint peeling off, but white and other light paints are sometimes victims of excessive chalking. To put it simply, chalking paint on interior walls occurs when the paint begins to separate which can happen for a number of different reasons.

What Causes Paint to Chalk?

As we mentioned, after long enough even high-quality paint will chalk, but there are certain factors that speed things up. One of the most common culprits is exposure to the sun. UV rays break down the binders in paint causing some separation and when oxygen is added to the mix the process of chalking gets started. Next up, low-quality paint can cause premature chalking of interior paint if it’s not engineered for your particular climate. Improper priming and preparation can also lead to your paint failing before it should. For the above reasons and more, it pays off to work with a trusted local painter

What To Do About Interior Chalk Painting

First, you want to assess the degree of the chalking. Grab a rag and wipe it along the surface to find out just how much chalking is occurring. Next, you can try power or pressure washing, but make sure that it’s not turned up too high. If you don’t have a pressure washer available, you can use a wire brush to remove the powder and then rinse with a hose. You can also use mild environmentally friendly soaps. Let the surface dry thoroughly and do your original check again and see how much chalk remains. If there is still a considerable amount, you’ll likely want to repaint.

When it’s time to repaint, you want to make sure you select UV-resistant paint that will stand up to the elements. To avoid any premature chalking, you should work with a professional painter that knows how to properly prime and prepare a space for paint, keeping the paint bound for years to come. When it comes to your home, don’t cheap out on painting, it makes a major impact on the look and feel of your home.

If you’re ready to paint your home’s interior or exterior, Tom Curren Companies can help. Reach out to us today for an estimate at 617-969-4900

Popcorn ceilings were once one of the most popular features in the interiors of homes. Throughout the 50s to the 80s, it was installed in many homes, however, it often contains asbestos which is known to be toxic. Nowadays, textured ceilings which are asbestos-free are still used but they aren’t for everyone. They can still collect dust and over time lose their luster. In this blog, we’re going to explore your options for dealing with popcorn ceilings.

Popcorn Ceiling Scraping

One of the good things about sprayed on stucco popcorn ceilings is that it can be scraped off. It’s a process that should be left to professionals because it’s quite labor-intensive and can be messy to do as a DIY project.

In addition to the scraping being labor-intensive, the ceiling sometimes requires some smoothing repairs afterward so that you’re left with a crisp, clean finish. This can be especially difficult to do yourself and you don’t want to end up with a worse-off ceiling. If your home is older, the stucco products could still contain asbestos, so in this situation, you should have a professional perform tests.

Replace the Popcorn Ceiling

An alternative to ceiling scraping is replacing the drywall. A contractor can remove the old popcorn-covered drywall relatively quickly and have new drywall installed. In the case of old asbestos-covered ceilings, they can safely deal with the construction waste.

Cover the Ceiling with Tiles or Panels

Besides going with a drywall replacement, you’ve got tons of other options which can give your home a new feel. Wood or panels of other materials can add warmth to a room and help give it some character. Ceiling tiles can also be featured in all or a portion of a ceiling to add some personalization and design prowess to a space. These options don’t often require removing the popcorn ceiling unless it contains asbestos.

Deempahasize Popcorn Ceiling with Lighting

Smart lighting placement and fixtures can help draw the eye away from popcorn ceilings. Select lighting that won’t be facing the ceiling directly to light up the texture. Think about some mounted downward-facing lighting fixtures to keep the room well-lit.

Paint Popcorn Ceiling

One of the other ways to deal with (non-toxic) popcorn ceilings is to decide to live with them. Now that they aren’t so popular, they can be a bit of a unique aesthetic. Painting is one of the best ways to freshen up the look of stucco ceilings. Work with a professional painter so that you can find a color that gives your desired effect of either emphasizing or deemphasizing the ceiling.

Folks have felt the benefits of spending time outdoors and want to be ready this year. Many are opting for new decks or patios to extend living spaces outdoors. A deck can be custom built to fit your exact needs and lifestyle which makes it such an attractive feature.

Pergolas are another outdoor feature that’s become more popular to shield homeowners from the sun while still enjoying the great outdoors. Everyone loves the sun but you can often spend more time outdoors if you’ve got a place to escape and cool off on warmer days.

Give the Home Office a Facelift

Tons of folks are working from home these days and many have children learning at home as well. Not everyone has dedicated spaces, but people were doing the best that they can. Many are turning to remodelers to build a home office that fits their needs.

Others who have space dedicated for a home office may have found that the room is too dull and needs an update. Painting your home office or replacing your windows can be great ways to brighten up the space without breaking the bank. Some smart color selections can help a room feel more productive and peaceful which are what homeowners want right now.

Bring More Light In

It’s always been the case, but now more than ever, homeowners are realizing the benefits of replacing their windows. The increase in natural light can help your home feel more comfortable and take advantage of cross breezes. Invisible windows screens can also be included to help it feel as though you’re enjoying the outdoors more without pests.

New windows also improve the curb appeal of your home in addition to the benefits you immediately feel. The value they add will be enjoyed by you and the buyer if you ever choose to sell your home.

This interior paint job is truly a perfect balance of form and function. As virtual learning has taken over this year, our repeat clients in Lincoln, MA had a new use for an old bedroom. Our team worked to transform their daughter’s bedroom into the perfect place for her to take her virtual grad school classes. With a pre-existing built-in desk and window seats with storage, this bedroom was the perfect option to convert into a classroom at home. The main attraction? A brand new full wall of whiteboard paint, perfect for brainstorming on homework or projects.

We refreshed the whole room – painting the three main walls in a beautiful BEHR Marquee China Silk Latex paint with a flat finish. Our team also gave new life to the built-in window seat and desk, repainting them in a Glidden Seaweed Latex paint in a semi-gloss finish, and matched the baseboard trim color. The feature wall of the room is painted in Benjamin Moore Notable Dry-Erase paint, allowing for writing and drawing on with dry-erase markers. This new wall allows for nearly 100 square feet of wall space to use as a blank canvas – talk about a productivity booster!

For attending virtual classes, doing homework, and studying for exams, this bedroom now acts as the perfect place for productivity by day and relaxation by night. Thinking about adding a whiteboard wall to your home? Check out our new blog on a few of the creative ways you can use whiteboard paint in your home!
