With summer lasting only a few short months, it can seem impossible to squeeze in everything you want to get done around your home. Not to mention, following a busy summer, your project might be waiting at the back of a long queue. Although you may be tempted to push off your exterior painting project until the winter when painters and contractors have more availability, that would be a huge mistake that would ultimately cost you! Leave the exterior painting for the summer, and in the meantime, there are plenty of other projects better suited for the winter months.

Can You Paint a House in the Winter?

Yes and no… Typically our exterior painting season goes from around April to mid-October. Low-temperature paint can be used to extend the season when the weather is less than favorable, however, winter house painting comes with risks. Without waiting for the proper conditions your exterior paint could suffer from mildew, peeling, bubbling, cracking, low sheen, color inconsistencies, or adhesion problems. Then you’ll be stuck footing the bill to hire another exterior painting contractor to fix what the first painter left behind! Instead of risking a bad exterior paint job in the winter, it’s best to wait until the right time of year – in the meantime, paint your interior!

Why You Should Avoid Painting in Winter:

Water-based paints, like latex and acrylic, require specific conditions to cure properly. When the weather is too cold, or too hot, it affects the chemicals in the paint and prevents them from bonding together properly. Most traditional latex-based paints won’t cure at temperatures below 60°F – the cold weather can affect the color and quality of the paint, making it lose its glossiness, or appear cloudy and blotchy. Luckily, some paint manufacturers have created low-temperature paint that can be applied in temperatures below 60°F, but despite advertising that the paint can be applied in temperatures as low as 35°F, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you can or should paint on a 35°F day. To pull off exterior painting in the winter, it doesn’t matter how good the quality of your paint is, what matters is the quality of your contractor– don’t let them pull a fast one on you and say they’ll paint your house on a 50°F day when the forecast predicts it’s going right back down to 20°F that night!

Paint takes time to cure, and the air temperature needs to remain above the minimum recommended temperature (40°F) for the entire curing process, not just during the application. A good contractor will wait for the right weather before painting your exterior to make sure that the paint performs like it should and looks great – especially if they offer a 5-year paint warranty like Tom Curren Companies does. If there happens to be a week of unseasonably warm weather, you might be able to get away with painting in the late fall or early spring, but it’s still not recommended to paint in the winter in New England. The ideal conditions for exterior painting range from 50°F to 85°F, with little to no wind, and between 40%-70% humidity…but good luck finding consistent 50°F+ weather with no wind, and no rain or snow during a Massachusetts winter!

Can You Paint Interior Walls in the Winter?

While the weather outside is frightful, your interior can look delightful! Interior painting isn’t weather dependent, so despite the rain, sleet, and snow, our painters and carpenters are ready to tackle all of your interior painting or remodeling projects. Some homeowners prefer to schedule work to be done at their home while they are away over the Holidays, so they don’t have to worry about living without use of their kitchen or living room for the week. However, there’s no need to go away in order to have your project completed in the winter – we make it painless for homeowners to live in their homes during a project. By utilizing zip walls, plastic barriers, and HEPA dustless vacuums, we are able to isolate the workspace from the rest of your home, preventing the spread of fumes and mess.

All year round, we offer interior painting services to homeowners looking to improve the appearance of their homes. Unhappy with the color of your kitchen, bedroom, or any other room in your home? The right combination of paint can completely change the look and feel of your home. If you need help deciding on a paint color, ask for one of our Color-Safe Selection Guides with pre-curated color samples to help you to get started!

Fall is your chance to get your home ready for the Winter and cold weather. It’s important to get anything you can prepare so that your home will look great no matter what kind of weather we face in Massachusetts. Routine maintenance helps you avoid costly problems down the line. Check out our tips for getting your home ready.

Inspect Windows & Doors

One of the easiest ways to boost your home’s energy-efficient is by opting for energy-star-rated windows and doors. Old windows and doors can become drafty, and that is energy and money right out the window. If your windows or doors aren’t creating a proper seal, consider replacing them; otherwise, they’ll be causing you problems well into the spring.

Replace Gutters & Downspouts

The leaves are starting to fall from the trees already and covering the lawn. They’re likely clogging up your gutters as well, though if they’re faulty. If they’re able to collect water and temperatures drop, they’ll freeze, and it can lead to cracks and problems with your roof. It’s best to have your gutters at least inspected at this time of the year to ensure that they’re functioning properly before snow hits.

Check Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors

This tip is for the inside of your home. For your and your family’s safety, it’s imperative to make sure that your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide sensors are working. Check the batteries and make a 21st-century upgrade if you’re using an older model alarm.

Professional Roof Inspection

Your roof is one of the main protectors of your home all year long, but it becomes especially important during the cold, stormy seasons. You should have your roof inspected by a professional a couple of times a year in Massachusetts. Any loose or missing shingles are telltale signs that it’s time for a new roof.

Get Your Yard Ready

Falling leaves on your lawn look beautiful for a time, but it’s essential to rake them up to avoid damage to your grass. Old leaves can get moldy if they aren’t taking care of, so remove them, so your lawn will look great come spring. Also, be sure to store any patio furniture and shut off outdoor faucets to avoid damage.

Clean Your Chimney & Fireplace

If you have a fireplace at your home, it’s a great asset to supplement your heating system and add some character. It can be risky if not maintained properly. You should hire a professional unless you’re well versed in correctly cleaning a chimney.

If you need help with preparing your home with new windows, doors, or more, Tom Curren Companies can help. Contact us today for an estimate

Painting your home is a great way to bring new life to an outdated space. From adding a statement wall to one room to repainting the whole exterior, there really are endless painting possibilities! Painting is not as easy as just slapping a new color on a wall though. There’s a lot of preparation and work that goes into the job to achieve a great end result. Certain areas are especially hard to reach, so how are you supposed to paint them?! There’s no simple answer, but these tips will make this tricky task a lot easier!

Prepare Before You paint

Take plenty of time to prepare the space you’re going to paint before you start. With hard-to-reach areas, the less careful you have to be, the better! That means taping off corners, outlet covers, and any other areas that aren’t meant to be painted. Remove wall hangings and cover the flooring with plastic sheeting. Furniture should be moved or covered too. Prepare the space so you can focus on getting the paint where it needs to go without worrying about causing damage to other items in the process.

Add Extenders to Brushes and Rollers

Brush and roller extenders are extremely helpful tools for painting hard-to-reach areas. Extenders attach to your painting supplies to give you more reach without climbing on a ladder. This makes the job less physically demanding too! The only downside to using extenders is that the further away you are from your brush or roller, the harder it is to control.

Get a Good Ladder

Extenders are a great tool, but they won’t work for intricate spaces and can’t reach every height. Invest in a good ladder at the start of your painting project. A ladder you feel comfortable on that provides a good level of height will give you the ability to reach the places where your extenders can’t. You’ll also be able to get closer to areas that require close attention that an extender won’t provide.

Hire a Professional

If all of this preparation and purchasing tools to make the paint job a DIY project sounds too overwhelming, hire a professional! Hiring a professional is the easiest way to get your painting project done with minimal stress and time taken out of your day. By the time you purchase all the tools you’ll need to reach high areas, a DIY painting project won’t be much cheaper than hiring someone who already has the tools they need. You’ll also be able to sit back and relax, knowing that the end result will look great!

Contact Tom Curren Companies today to schedule a consultation to discuss your interior or exterior painting needs. Our team has years of experience and all the tools needed to reach even the most difficult places!

Paint Chalking on Interior Walls

Paint chalking on interior walls is when a powdery pigment residue resides on the surface of a coat of paint. This also comes with a loss of gloss or sheen and fading of the paint. Interior paint chalking is normal for the most part over time and preferable to paint peeling off, but white and other light paints are sometimes victims of excessive chalking. To put it simply, chalking paint on interior walls occurs when the paint begins to separate which can happen for a number of different reasons.

What Causes Paint to Chalk?

As we mentioned, after long enough even high-quality paint will chalk, but there are certain factors that speed things up. One of the most common culprits is exposure to the sun. UV rays break down the binders in paint causing some separation and when oxygen is added to the mix the process of chalking gets started. Next up, low-quality paint can cause premature chalking of interior paint if it’s not engineered for your particular climate. Improper priming and preparation can also lead to your paint failing before it should. For the above reasons and more, it pays off to work with a trusted local painter

What To Do About Interior Chalk Painting

First, you want to assess the degree of the chalking. Grab a rag and wipe it along the surface to find out just how much chalking is occurring. Next, you can try power or pressure washing, but make sure that it’s not turned up too high. If you don’t have a pressure washer available, you can use a wire brush to remove the powder and then rinse with a hose. You can also use mild environmentally friendly soaps. Let the surface dry thoroughly and do your original check again and see how much chalk remains. If there is still a considerable amount, you’ll likely want to repaint.

When it’s time to repaint, you want to make sure you select UV-resistant paint that will stand up to the elements. To avoid any premature chalking, you should work with a professional painter that knows how to properly prime and prepare a space for paint, keeping the paint bound for years to come. When it comes to your home, don’t cheap out on painting, it makes a major impact on the look and feel of your home.

The New England elements can be especially hard on the woodwork around your home. Sunlight breaks down the natural lignin polymer that holds the wood together,  allowing water to seep into your boards and shingles, leaving them susceptible to rot. As a homeowner, you can prevent this damage by giving your exterior wood a coat of quality stain. A stain is different from paint – it’s a liquid substance used to protect and color wood.  This description could also theoretically apply to paint. However, there are some key differences between wood stain and paint.

What is Paint vs. Stain?

Both substances are made up of the same ‘ingredients’ — a pigment and a vehicle. The main difference between the two is that paint remains on the surface of the wood, whereas stain is absorbed into it.  Paint tends to be thicker than stain, so it can be applied in fewer coats. However, because paint stays on top of the wood, it covers up any details in that wood that may make your home more attractive. Painting wood is also more expensive than staining it.

Stains are designed to be absorbed into the wood, so it doesn’t obscure the grain while coloring it. It’s easier to apply stains than paint, as well as to re-coat any surfaces when they need it. You don’t always need to prime the wood before applying stain, so it’s faster than painting, as well. Also, unlike paint, wood stains are not subject to chipping. However, because wood stain is thinner than paint, it wears away faster and needs to be reapplied more frequently. There are also fewer colors to choose from in stains, as the purpose of a wood stain is to present an enhanced wood color rather than a bold color such as yellow or green.

Popular Types of Natural Wood Stain

There are various kinds of wood stain to choose from. The two major types are semi-transparent and solid. A semi-transparent stain is ideal for structures where you want to see the details of the wood grain for a more rustic or natural feel. Solid stains are similar to paint in that they leave a solid coating of pigment that can obscure the details of the wood, though not to the same degree as paint.

Beyond texture, your wood stain could be water-based, oil-based, or varnish-based.

Advantages of water-based wood stains:

  • Do not produce fumes
  • Non-flammable
  • Easier to clean up
  • Maintains color for a longer time

Advantages of oil-based wood stains:

  • Smoother finish
  • Permeates the natural wood deeper for greater protection
  • Less maintenance
  • More resistant to fading or damage from the elements

Advantages of using a varnish-based wood stain:

  • Provides a clear and transparent finish
  • Maintains more of the natural color of the wood
  • Dries quickly

The type of stain you decide to use is generally dependent on the kind of wood you are working with, as well as your own preferences for color or grain visibility.

How Often Should You Stain Your House?

Much like paint, a wood stain has to be reapplied after a certain point. Usually, when you notice your wood starting to become dull, dry, or turning a grayish tint, it’s time to reapply. However, coats of wood stain applied before you begin to see damage are ideal.

The amount of time between reapplications is also dependent on the type of stain you used. If you’ve used a semi-transparent stain, you can go 3-5 years between reapplications. With a solid stain, because it’s thicker and more resilient than the semi-transparent style, you can reapply it every 5-10 years depending on the elements your wood is exposed to.

Natural materials have offered beautiful home aesthetics for years. In order to protect those aesthetics, you should maintain your wood with a quality stain, which is something our professionals know a lot about. Your home’s exterior does a great job of representing you, or at least we hope it does. If not, a paint refresh is one of the best ways to give it more life. Painting your home can totally change the first impression that guests get. With more time spent at home, you want to be happy with how your home looks. Let’s check out some of the reasons why Spring is the best time to paint your home.

The Weather

Spring in New England means mild temperatures in general. It’s not too hot or humid yet, and you don’t have to worry about extreme cold either. Modern paints are much more resistant to temperatures, but it’s still much easier to set well in Spring weather.

The Exterior of Your Home is Stressed

Not the same kind of stress that people feel, your home’s paint job can also become stressed. Through the various weather conditions we experience in the Boston area, your home’s exterior deals with a lot. Snow, ice, rain, and high humidity can negatively impact the appearance of your home over the years, leading to cracks and chips. Too much moisture also can lead to mold and mildew growth. UV rays can cause paint to fade. The variety of weather we have here is a lot to handle for exteriors. Springtime illuminates these issues, making it a great time for new paint

Less Foliage

In the Spring, especially early on, trees and bushes haven’t flowered yet. So there aren’t bushes and other foliage in the way, giving maximum access to every part of the home’s exterior.

Work with the Best Painters

If you wait too long until the end of Spring and early Summer, the best painters in your area may be booked solid. Make sure to get your quote from a reputable painting company early in the year so you can get the job done well and enjoy it sooner.

Good Pricing

After a long winter, many contractors are ready to get out in the weather and start working. This means that you can get more competitive rates at this time. Remember to act fast before schedules and rates both go up with demand.

Ready for Summer

Many people are spending more time outdoors at their homes than ever. The sooner your home is painted and feeling fresh, the sooner you’ll be enjoying it from your deck or yard. Painting your home in the Spring is one of the best ways to get the most value out of it.

If you’re a homeowner interested in giving your home an update, our team at Tom Curren Companies can help. Contact us today for a painting estimate.

It’s common to have a running “wishlist” of projects you want to get done around the house. To save yourself time and money, why not do them all at once? Often times, our clients will come to us for one project and continue to add on more as they see the progress. For this Sudbury referral, that was just the case.

Initially, we went out to the house for exterior painting changing the home from an old dusty gray, to a fresh new light blue color. While inspecting the home on our first visit, we determined that there was rot that needed to be repaired before we started to paint. Our team removed ⅞’s of the existing siding and replaced it with CVG cedar and WRC and a new vapor barrier. On the remaining small area of siding that was still intact, we reset the nails, re-filled with proper caulking, sanded it down, and spot primed. Once the siding was prepped and primed, our team applied 2 coats of Sherwin Williams paint in a light blue Jubilee color. To put the finishing touches on the exterior, we removed, repainted, and rehung the existing shutters in a Benjamin Moore Newburyport Blue, to contrast the newly painted siding.

Additionally, our clients wanted to replace all of the original windows on the house to boost curb appeal, and increase energy efficiency. As Pella Certified Contractors, our team recommended installing replacement Pella Architect Series double-hung windows, new standard, and sliding doors, as well as a bay and bow window with unique diamond grills. The diamond grills are truly the standout feature on the house, as they highlight the original colonial character of the home. For the interior of the windows, our team was able to utilize the many colors and options that Pella offers for the interior finish – matching the windows to existing paint & stain colors.

Along with the visual enhancements to the siding and windows, our team also made a few structural changes that helped increase our clients’ quality of life at home. We replaced four stairs off of the back door with a 4’ x 3’ landing and 5-5 ½” shallow granite steps. Adjacent to these steps was an existing walkout patio off the new Pella sliding door in the back. Our team added one additional granite step leading from the patio to the ground level, where there was previously a slanted sunken brick step. By adding shallow granite steps in both of these places, we were able to give the homeowners peace of mind knowing their steps are sturdy, and will be reliable through all of the New England elements.Archit

Multi-component projects always have the most amazing results, and keep our clients happy for years to come. There is no project too big or small for the TCC Team to take on – give us a call to schedule an estimate today 617-969-4900.

Changing the color of the outside of your home is one of the best ways to raise the value and be an attractive addition to your neighborhood. Finding the right paint for your needs, however, can present a challenge. If you’re looking for the best exterior paint product for your house, keep reading for a few key tips that’ll make the process easier.

Don’t Forget Primer

Even if you choose the perfect paint for your needs, it won’t perform as well without a primer. As the name indicates, this product primes the surface for painting. An exterior primer not only creates an even foundation for the paint to sit on, but it also acts as a sealant for wood or siding. This ensures that the paint appears even in color and that the surface underneath is protected from the elements.

In the case of primer, you indeed get what you pay for. A low-quality primer doesn’t have the longevity of better-quality ones, and that means you’ll find yourself redoing the process much more often, which is hardly the cost-saving you might have been looking for.

What’s the Climate?

To choose the right primer and paint products, you’ll need to think about what the climate is like where you live. In areas that experience long periods of high humidity or low temperatures, you’ll need to find products that are rated for those factors. If you’d like to lengthen the lifespan of your paint job, you may need to consider special products that will resist local weather issues. For instance, many types of paint experience cracking when exposed to sub-zero temperatures, so if that’s a regular winter where you live, you’ll need to look at different options.

Latex or Oil

Most exterior paints will either be oil-based or latex. When choosing between the two, it’s not a matter of which is superior in quality, but rather which material is best for your home’s exterior surface. Depending on whether you have siding, wood, or brick, you’ll need a different type of paint. Latex is most suitable to vinyl or wood siding, and a special version called elastomeric latex paint works well on stucco or brick exteriors. Oil-based paints work the best on wood, especially in drier regions.

There is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to finding the right type of exterior paint product for your home. Hiring a professional painter is your best bet in having your project go smoothly and ensuring that you get the right products for your needs, whatever they are. Contact Tom Curren Companies today to get started.

Our new Lexington clients were eager to change the color of their 2005 home. The home was prepped with a thorough wash by hand using bleach and jomax. The siding, trim, doors, window casings, and garage door were all scraped, spot primed and painted with two new coats.
The siding was Benjamin Moore Southfield Green, while the trim was a classic Decorators White. The front door received a new coat of Benjamin Moore Lafayette Green while the threshold and ceiling were provided a new coat of Marine Spar Varnish.
Lastly, our client’s small deck was lightly sanded and applied two coats of Fairview Taupe stain.
